In 2018, the last Spring Forum of Contemporary Art will be held at 9 December in Museum of Contemporary Arts, Taipei. In the last forum, in ordert to frame the aesthetics of Dansaekhwa, we will invite professor Zheng Yeon Shim, Co-Curator of 2018 Gwangju Biennial to probe into the polemics of historical contexts and discursive texts of the critics and painters of Dansaekhwa of South Korea in 1970.

The talk will look at how Korean Dansaekhwa critics and artists attempted to identify its aesthetics in the 1970s by discussing the historical and critical context of the monochromatic abstract style. In the late 1960s, experimental artists and small collective groups organized the Union Exhibition of Korean Young Artists which in the 1970s gave way to the establishment of Dansaekhwa. Dr. Zheng will explore specific exhibitions in commercial galleries and museums and examine the works of Park Seo-bo, Ha Chong-Hyun, Lee Ufan, Chung Sang-Hwa, Yun Hyong-Keun, Chung Chang-sup, Kwon Young-Woo (the first generation of Dansaekhwa) and so on. She will also analyze the Ecole de Seoul and Indépendant exhibitions, by focusing on the roles of Lee Yil in his critical essays and writings. After examining the history of abstract exhibitions, the talk will discuss how Korean artists were represented in art exhibitions in the 1970s and 1980s in Taiwan. Specifically it will look at Korean artists who participated in “Sino-Korean Modern Art Exchange Exhibition” (National Museum of History, 1977); “Exhibition of the Ecole de Seoul: Paper and Form” (Spring Gallery, 1983); and “Contemporary Korea Art Exhibition” (1984).
